You’ve possibly arrived here bewildered at your discovery that when shopping for a rug in the United Kingdom you are confronted with very little choice in size.
The three popular sizes you are likely to find are 80cm x 150cm, 120cm x 170cm and 160cm x 230cm. Whilst there are some variations of up to 10cm length and width in these sizes, this is basically what you find in most stores and websites. If you’re looking for something larger, there are some rugs produced in sizes around 200cm x 290cm and there’s an odd few made around 240cm x 330cm sizes.

Popular rug sizes are governed by several factors, including the average size of rooms in the UK, to the size that a rug store can physically handle and display. There is also a reluctance in many UK households to sit furniture on top of rugs. So, a typical 160cm x 230cm rug in an average UK lounge with a 2-seater and 3-seater sofa usually sits nicely without going under the furniture legs. This is what we generally class as a large rug.
If you’re looking for larger rugs you are without a doubt going to be hit by many restrictions. You probably thinking, there must be thousands of homes with larger rooms or even households with average rooms that want to sit the entire three-piece suite on the rug. And you’d be right! But, for every house with a large room, there are literally hundreds with average rooms.

The size of our homes.

In the UK the typical living room size for a pre-war semi-detached house with separate living and dining room is around 15ft x 12ft (4.57 x 3.66cm) which may also incorporate a chimney breast and a bay window. Houses built post war to around the 60s were often more compact and included a through lounge and dining room. In the late ’70s to the present day, the kitchen area became more relevant and we saw the design of homes including the dining area with the kitchen to make a kitchen/dining room.

Official figures show that an average UK living room size in the 1930s was around 16 square metres peaking at 25 square metres in the 1970s then reduced to a present-day 17 square metres. It’s fair to accept that semi-detached homes have been getting more compact over the decades. As there is no mention of dining rooms in the figures it’s likely that the style of new build homes no longer includes the dining area in the living room figures. Assuming this is the case then the living area in a standard semi-detached dwelling is still only around 16 to 17 square meters.

Flooring trends over the years.

Because of our historical use of fitted carpets in living areas, here in the UK, our demand for rugs over the years has been very different to our continental and transatlantic cousins.

While we are now seeing more and more hard flooring being used in the living areas, we look more towards rugs as décor for these spaces. We are still behind when it comes to using the rug to fill the floorspace correctly.
Rugs were mainly handwoven until the introduction of broader Wilton and Axminster looms in the early 1900. These looms were capable of reproducing designs similar to Persian hand knotted rugs. In the 50s and 60s these broader looms were used to make large rugs to virtually cover the room, then they were adapted to cater for the latest trend, fitted carpets. Possibly because of the smaller room sizes and the added advantage of wall to wall insulation they offered, fitted carpet just became the norm in the UK.

Companies like BMK (Blackwood Morton and Sons of Kilmarnock) were still producing large patterned rugs in the sixties. By that time companies like Cyril Lord were entering the market place with plainer tufted carpets, which made fitted carpets even more affordable.

While the rest of the world moved to the plainer style tufted carpets, here in the UK the patterned Axminster carpet still dominated the market. Patterned rugs on a patterned carpet were a big no, so instead, we opted for smaller fireside and abstract tonal shaggy rugs.

In the 80s we were using more plain carpet in our homes but there was still a huge demand for traditional patterns. Technology had advanced and we were now printing designs on carpets while the Belgian rug weavers were developing faster face to face Wilton looms. In a repeat of the 50’s and 60s trends, these looms were also commissioned to make patterned fitted carpets for the United Kingdom.

The 90s saw a significant change in our demands for flooring, we were moving over to plainer styles of twist pile carpets while using more hard flooring in our living areas. This, in turn, increased our demand for rugs to decorate the plainer spaces, but our smaller average size rooms combined with our inability to imagine extra-large rugs in our homes means we still opt for smaller sizes.

In bygone days we did use larger rugs and were happy to sit our furniture on them. In many older houses, you can still see the remnants of paint on the floorboards at the edge of the room, there was often an unpainted square in the centre of the room where the large rugs would be seated. Are we ever likely to see an attitude change back to these older trends?

The problem is in many areas of retail sales, they don’t think of niche requirements. They only want products that sell fast. When it comes to products like rugs you have an additional problem, not only do larger sizes sell slower, they cost more to buy and are more awkward to handle and store.
To be fair the problems of larger sizes don’t always stop with the retailers, couriers who deliver the rugs generally don’t want large parcels and parcels that are not in boxes. Many of the budget couriers won’t handle a parcel with any dimension larger than 120cm and when they do there is always a premium to pay to get this larger size delivered.

With all the obstacles from slow turnover to delivery costs, it’s not surprising that many retailers don’t offer extra-large sizes.

What are your options?

It depends upon the size and shape of the room but in some spaces, it is possible to use two or three rugs to good effect. The practice of using multiple rugs is commonly used in long narrow rooms where even extra-large conventional rug sizes refuse to fit.

The idea of using multiple rugs really comes from the Nomadic tribes who made and used rugs as furnishing for their tents. Because rugs are compact and portable, they were easy for the caravans to transport to the high mountain grazing pastures and in situ gave insulation from the colder higher ground. Layering rugs one on top of another not only gave additional comfort, but it also gave protection from the cold ground beneath.

If you can find a way to mix and match smaller rugs to fill your living space, this has got to be the easiest option.
Making your own large rug by using broadloom carpet and cutting it to size, then edging it, is another option. This can be quite cost-effective, but you may have to buy extra and throw away the waste. Getting the edges bound can also work out expensive, especially with large sizes. The downside is you generally only have the option of plain colours and repetitive patterns, that just look like what they are, a carpet with a whipped edge.
If you are on a really tight budget you can also upcycle your rugs from old carpet samples. It’s a lot of hard work and takes a degree of skill, but it can be done.
The word bespoke is synonymous with Savile Row tailors, famed for their made to measure suits. However, there are many more retail products available that can be produced to a customers requirements. Bespoke rugs, may not be the first product to spring to mind, but there are many situations in our homes where a made to size rug would fit perfectly.
While many of our homes have similar layouts, room sizes can be radically different, add to that the varied arrangement and size of our furniture, and the living space we have left can be very diverse. Yet we are often limited to around 4 rug sizes to fit those varying spaces. The right size and shape rug in the right environment can be a real asset to the living space. And let’s not forget colour and design, why should a range of rugs be limited to just a few colours?

Who sells made to measure rugs?

At iwantarug.com we have tried to tackle the problem head-on, by producing a bespoke service that places the customer in the driving seat. We’ve developed software that can reproduce size, design and colour, simply. Enabling the customer to better visualise the finished product. With over 90 up-to-the-minute colours covering the popular hues and tones, many are styled around highly fashionable paint colours from manufacturers such as Farrow and Ball. The customer should have ample choice, think about it, a two colour (two-tone) design with 90 colourways can potentially give over 8,000 different variations.
Visualising the finished rug on a computer screen is one thing, but we know our client’s really want to see the real texture and colours while getting a hand on what the finished quality of the rug will actually feel like. To this end we have had sample swatches in the quality and colours of the rug produced. We will post cuttings of the colours before the client makes the final choice.
Once the design, colour and quality is approved we send the colour and design specifications to our partners in India. They will produce the design CAD images for the clients final approval, it’s from these images that the rug will be produced. From approval to delivery takes around six weeks.
Our rugs are currently only available in two quality variations, both are hand-tufted using a high-grade wool pile and are finished with a heavy hessian backing. We also offer a loop pile version of the same, the loop piles are usually produced in combination with a cut pile to give plain ground rugs texture and design.

Designing the rug using the software.

It can be daunting imagining design and colour, our software aims to subtly guide the client by using templates, many of which are pre-coloured and allowing the client to add an accent colour. There are also drag and drop design elements that can be added to the base colour, then re-coloured to give thousands of colour and design options. Adding borders and motifs in a creative way can fashion something really unique.
The client may have a project in mind that they can draw, or it may be a corporate or club logo design. If it can be drawn in a few colours, we can reproduce it, just email us with the basic plan and we’ll take it from there. When doing a design from scratch the best way to approach it is imagine painting with numbers, each section represents a colour which is built into a design. Our tufters are highly skilled and can reproduce virtually anything that’s thrown at them.Shapes are another area where we can excel, circles, ovals, hexagon and octagon are popular choices, but we can also produce more abstract and random shapes such as a shoe sole shape or even a guitar.

How much will a bespoke rug cost?

The big surprise with our bespoke rug service is the cost, we don’t hide our prices, they are calculated when you input the rug size. We’ve pitched our prices within the budget of a standard household. Our rugs have a similar square meter price to comparable qualities you’d find in John Lewis and Debenhams or brands such as Brink and Campman from independent retailers.

When considering furnishing a contemporary dwelling, it is important to consider the design elements that make up your home. Consider the colour scheme. Most contemporary dwellings have simple light colour schemes. When looking for floor coverings, make sure that the colour will work. The material is also worth consideration. A modern home with uncovered floors would benefit from deep pile carpets, where a carpeted property may require a flat-weave.

Rugs of all sizes and colours are available online, and can help to tie a room together, either with similar colours or a daring splash of bright colour. A large rug in the centre of a minimal sitting room can really help to bring focus to the living area. Angles and lines can also be well offset by a geometric design. There are many rugs with daring contemporary designs that work perfectly in juxtaposition with simple colour schemes. For those with more looking for more balance, but who still wish to bring a touch of movement to their home, there are many rugs available with linear design. Carved rugs have raised textures in patterns and colours to suit many contemporary spaces.

Rugs do not have to be plain or geometric. Large rugs bearing pictures of animals, iconic design such as the VW Camper Van and famous logos can be stylish, and also allow you to show your lighter side, and personal tastes. Iconic designs from the sixties are very popular, and online rug specialists have a wide range of these stylish floor coverings. Simple faunal designs such as bamboo or leaf designs bring nature into the modern home. Animal print rugs are a popular alternative to skins as they are ecologically more desirable. Many contemporary spaces make use of interesting shapes; circular staircases, curved baths and open plan kitchens. Crescent, oval and circular rugs can help to define the shape of a space.

That’s flat woven rugs if you didn’t already know. These are rugs that have no pile to speak of the surface texture resembles a blanket rather than a carpet. Many of these are woven like heavy throws using wool, cotton or acrylic fabrics better known as Kilim rugs. You know the sort of thing you’d expect to see in a shop Laura Ashley.. The type of thing you won’t find on our website, simply because in my opinion they are not worth the money. They never stay in place, curl up and move on virtually any surface you put them on. It is literally like having a blanket on the floor.

When you think of shaggy rugs then you might hark back to the sixties or seventies and the heyday of flower power when they were very popular. Yes, they look great. But aren’t they difficult to maintain?
I mean, all those long fibres, have to make the life span of a rug pretty short, don’t they?
Actually, whilst the key to keeping your rug in pristine condition is regular maintenance, it’s not that difficult to do. Let’s face it, if our Viking ancestors could keep them clean and well maintained, with all our modern appliances we should be able to do the same.

One problem people used to have with shaggy rugs was that they were often more expensive than other options. With all the new manufacturing techniques we have today, the good news is that suppliers have been able to bring the costs down and pass them onto the customer. These luxury long pile rugs are now no more expensive than other ranges and designs on the market.

The deep pile surface have a great texture. Whereas other carpets or rugs tend to just sit on your floor and depend on their design to engage the eye, shaggys have a life and a personality of their own. They may all be manufactured to the same design but once they get into your home they take on a unique persona. Colours change and deepen when they get pushed a certain way and even the way the light falls on them makes a difference.

There’s no doubt that these rugs were made for cold, winter evenings. Not only do they provide great insulation for the floor, they’re perfect for sitting on next to a hot fire. Whilst other carpets are hard to touch, you can happily stretch out in comfort while the winter rain, or snow, falls outside.
Shaggy carpets and rugs make a luxury statement, 100% of the time. You can get designs that show ripples in deep and exotic colours, and you can find rugs that just add fun to a room or a hallway. Yes, they take a little more maintenance than other carpets but it’s nothing too difficult – regular vacuuming and cleaning, perhaps a little brushing, to make sure that the long pile remains in good condition.

They’re great in the bedroom, especially if you have a hard wood floor. You don’t want to step out of bed onto a cold floor, much better to settle your feet into the deep pile of a carpet that feels great under foot and keeps you warm as you wake up to the day.
It seems that people often put obstacles in the way of getting a shaggy rug. They have kids who jump around the place. There are animals too, rolling about in the deep pile. Maybe if you don’t trust the rest of the household to look after it properly, you can simply have it in your bedroom where you can make sure it is taken care of.

If you want a carpet that has a sense of luxury and looks and feels great underfoot, then a high pile rug could be just the thing you are looking for.

Transitional Nain Style in a modern silver colouration

Many people who opt for a modern style of decor worry that a traditional rug won’t fit in too well, but this is far from the case. Traditional rugs don’t have to be pale and flowery – in fact, some of the strongest and most vibrant designs come from our traditional range, in particular the Navajo and Gabbeh rugs, which have strong geometric lines and very definite colour schemes. Traditional wool rugs of this type are good choices if you have gone for the modern style, because they ground the look with something that has stood the test of time and is considered a design classic. Sometimes, going too modern can make the whole decor a little hard to handle.

Modern rugs can be lovely, of course, and they use different fibres and colours to give a thoroughly fresh and innovative feel to a room. But sometimes in a minimalist and modern setting there is a need for something which is not quite so cutting edge but could be considered to be a little more classic. This can ‘bring down’ the look from the quirky to the more comfortably modern and also it gives you the choice to become more traditional later on, if your tastes change.

Our range of traditional rugs is phenomenal and well worth a look, even if you have decided to go all modern. The Navajo rugs in particular are very friendly to any environment, being usually in natural shades with sometimes a hint of red or green. Bokhara rugs are also a great way to span the gap between traditional and modern, with their crisp designs. Both styles come in larger sizes, so using a traditional rug as a centre point in a room would look excellent as well as being a cost effective way of making a statement.

Everyone has been in rooms where too much is going on as far as the decor goes. When a modern interior is taken to extremes it can leave you with very jangled nerves as every new element takes you by surprise. A nice calming Navajo rug is a great centrepiece and at Rug Zone prices will leave a nice bit over for a nice abstract print, to give the whole look some well-deserved class.
With many homeowners opting for hardwood floors nowadays, you might be forgiven for thinking that carpets and rugs have had their day. The truth is that adding a stylish rug to your hardwood floor can make all the difference, providing something elegant and decorative that feels great underfoot.

Three of the main places that we tend to put hardwood flooring is in the hallway, on the landing and in the kitchen. These are generally well used spaces and you want them to be easy to clean. The problem is that they can often be a little ‘cold’ and introducing a couple of nice carpet runners here and there can make all the difference.

What are Runners?

Runners are long rugs that don’t require any professional fitting and can be found in a number of different designs to suit the décor of your home. You can opt for traditional styles or go for something more modern in a variety of fabrics. The great thing about runners is they can be purchased in different shapes and sizes to suit almost any space from your hallway to your kitchen.
Used on hard floors they not only add a layer of protection but also reduce noise and provide comfort underfoot. Runners can either be laid loosely on the floor or if you want a more permanent fitting then you can use something like rug control spray to make sure that it stays put without damaging the hardwood underneath.

Runners for the Hallway

One of the best places for a runner is in the hallway where it can be an attractive decoration for those entering the house. With so much traffic going through you may not want to invest in a full carpet for your hall but still would like some colour and definition. With a great many designs to choose from at very competitive prices, putting down a runner can give you the best of both worlds.

Runners for the Kitchen

You may not think that a runner in the kitchen is a good idea, particularly where food is being prepared. But it can add another design dimension to this area of the house and is pretty easy to clean and maintain. Again it can also help protect the floor beneath in one of the busiest rooms in any home.

Other Options for Hard Floors

Runners are ideal for any elongated space and you can put them almost anywhere. If you have a hard wood floor in the bedroom then you might want to run one alongside the bed so that you keep your feet nice and warm in the winter. The landing is another prime location for a good runner, helping to muffle the sound of footsteps when people get up in the night. With so many different sizes available, you can probably find a runner for any part of your home.

Easy to lay down and available in a wide variety of patterns, designs and materials, a strategically placed carpet runner can add comfort and style to your home for little cost. Whilst it looks great on a hardwood floor, you can also use it for carpeted areas where you want to add a little extra protection.

There’s something comforting about traditional rug designs that makes them just as popular today as they have been at any time in the past. Whether it’s that Persian or Oriental feel to your rug, or something made closer to home, it seems traditional is perfectly suited to the job of decorating the floor of any home, wherever you chose to lay that carpet.

It’s not just older people that go for the traditional design either, it’s popular with the younger generation too and has continued to be a favourite over the years.
Whilst the latest weaving and design techniques mean you can get almost any design onto your carpet, many people still opt for the traditional look when it comes to choosing a rug. You can go for a runner, octagonal, circular or square rug but they all have that clean cut design and promise of opulence that sets them apart from other designs.

Different Types of Traditional Rug

Many of the traditional rugs we know and love today have their origin in the East. Bokhara rugs are knotted by hand in Pakistan whilst Kasbah rugs are often to be found in the markets of Morocco. You can now find these kinds of traditional rug manufactured in places as far flung as New Zealand and in a variety of different materials and weaving techniques. The design remains popular though, wherever it is made.

Other rugs have grown out of the English carpet industry, particularly through the Victorian times when manufacturing was at its height. These include makes such as and English Manor which both have their own history. The first Axminster was woven for Chatsworth House back in 1830 and still adorns the floor of the library there today.

What they all have in common is the ability to make a floor look stylish and opulent without being overbearing. There are plenty of traditional options to choose from, with prices to suit most pockets, including:
• Persian: Originating from Iran, the designs for Persian carpets were symbolic and often woven by nomadic tribes. Early fragments of Persian carpets date back to well before the birth of Christ.
• Ziegler: Distinguished by its broad border and muted colour tones, Ziegler rugs make a stylish addition to any room.
• English Manor: A design that rose out of the French renaissance period, if you want a traditional carpet with ornate medallions and florals then this is the rug for you.
• Sherborne Grange: A favourite with many households, this rug uses a central motif and often incorporates flowers such as irises and lotuses.

These traditional carpets used to be the province of the well to do and became a sign of affluence in late Victorian times and the early part of the 20th Century. They continued to be a popular design for flooring in many homes during the 70s and 80s. In more recent times they have become an affordable and decorative way to make your floor look stylish and are still a first choice for many, even with new designs coming onto the market.
What rugs are the easiest to clean? It may sounds like a simple question to answer, but there are so many variables to consider and let’s not forget the easiest rugs to clean may not be your preferred texture. A machine washable rug is the logical answer but a typical lounge size rug is just too big to fit into a standard washing machine, so these are usually only made in small bathroom sizes. When we say clean do we mean stains or general maintenance like vacuuming? If you need to wash a rug my advice is; don’t do it yourself, find a reputable specialist carpet and rug cleaner. So, to save going around in circles let's first establish that this article refers to general maintenance and spot cleaning.

Some quick general rules to consider before buying a new rug. Lighter colours are are more likely to show soiling and dark colours are likely to show dust and hairs. Plainer rugs will show more tracking and wear than a patterned rugs. Busy designs with many contrasting colours will appear to wear better because your eye focuses on the design rather than the traffic paths. Longer pile lengths take more maintenance than short piles.
He tells me they efficient and look superb as they glow and radiate with warmth in the winter. So, I asked him; “why don’t you have one in your home?” Apparently his wife did want one but he said no, because; “they are hard work as they need a thorough cleaning at least every two weeks”. And, there is also the constant opening and closing of the stove door to refuel.

A well covered traditional designs in man made fabric

Prime place for rug you would think, but as you open the stove door to refuel, out spits some hot ash. And that’s another black spot on the rug! It has to said, fire and fabric just don’t mix. While it is highly unlikely that any rug would actually ignite, it will get damaged if hot cinders make contact with the pile surface. So what is the solution?

I have spoken to many customers about this very problem. Many have a sheet they lay on top of the rug before they open the stove door, while others move the rug to one side, providing it is small enough. Some even have a small rug to go on top of the large rug. But human nature as it is will mean we open that door the one time we don’t have any protection, and out spits the cinder.

Many customers will buy cheaper rugs and just replace the if it gets burnt, this often means using a rug produced with man-made fibres. Which on fabrics like polypropylene that have a very low melt rate, will burn black and turn to a consistency of hard toffee. If you choose a rug made of manmade fibre, get one with random black spots and a heavy traditional design that will hide small singes.

See how wool burns compared to other fabrics

If you choose a wool pile for your rug you will have the peace of mind that small singes will just dust off, leaving just a slight scar. It is still best to go for pattern that has good coverage. Back in the days when it was legal to smoke in public places wool was always the specified fibre for social areas such as pubs where it was likely that cigarette could be discarded in the floor.

To sum up: using wool is preferable in front of a woodburning stove as it will resist small burns and protect your fitted carpets, if you must choose manmade fibre go for a buy design. We all want to spend our hard earned cash sensibly, but when it comes to buying a new rug you can be faced with the dilemma of not knowing whether to go for a handmade or a machine made rug. Which is better, what will give more durability, what is going to keep its good looks longer? These are possibly just some of the questions going around your head. And to be perfectly honest with you, it’s virtually impossible to come up with a generalised tried and tested formula.

My first line of advice is to ignore how it’s actually made and start with the colour, texture and size. Once you have narrowed down the options take it to the next stage, then the next until you are happy your choice. Personally I don’t give a hoot how it’s made, if the rug is of a colour, design and texture that appeals then it goes on my floor. That being said, it also has to have the approval of my wife who will not have a rug with a harsh feeling fibre.

You are likely to have a rough budget along an image in your head of what you want, once you start to look you’ll probably be swayed by fascinating designs and captivating textures. There are some great ideas out there, but at the end of the day you will probably be brought back down to earth and choose something practical at an average price point. Which will revert you right back to the handmade or machine made dilemma. The big irony here is; that could include a cheap to medium priced handmade rug or a medium to high priced machine made rug.

As an experienced online retailer of rugs we at Rug Zone try to offer products that we consider good value for money and will not generally cause problems during use. So rather than going around in circles like a politician in a debate, let me give you benefit of thinking like retailer.

Machine Made Rugs
Machine made rugs, and I refer mainly to woven Wilton production, are definitely more predictable and consistent than their handmade counterparts. But they are often limited on colours and textures due to manufacturing techniques. Most Wilton rugs are produced using polypropylene fibre because it feels good is stain resistant and wears well. As a retailer these give us very few problems.

Handmade Rugs
Handmade rugs that fit into the popular price ranges are usually hand tufted and the majority are produced in China and India. When we are talking about wool pile surface a higher priced product will usually buy you better quality fibre and finnish.

It’s only natural to expect more from a higher priced product, you have to remember though, these rugs are fantastic value for money because they are genuinely made by hand, by individuals on extremely low wages. In general the flooring trade anticipates some small inconsistencies with handmade rugs, we tend to call them “characteristics”. You the consumer may be unwilling accept the fact that you can buy two of the same item but they have slight differences. It’s just the nature of any handmade product, however usually when you pay a slightly higher price you are also buying better quality control which means a more consistent product.

The bottom line is, buy a rug because you like the look and texture and forget about the forepart, that's really all we do as retailers.

A quick note on hand knotted rugs
These are at the top end of the price scale and fit into the handmade Persian rug genedra. I see many rugs on offer that claim to be hand knotted but I believe many are simply hand loomed, which isn’t the same. If you are thinking of buying a new or reconditioned hand knotted rug it’s a big purchase so best visit SpongoBongo or GoodweavePhilip Cottonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17044448602892881175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171217998218510309.post-63572412215293790832015-06-17T14:23:00.002+01:002015-12-06T21:54:53.857+00:00Can men aim? The big question!

Recently, a German landlord tried to sue his ex-tenant for the cost of repairs to a bathroom caused by his bad aim when using the loo. The case actually went to court but was thrown out because the court upheld a man’s right to pee standing up – the landlord had contended that it was reasonable for all property owners to insist that their tenants pee sitting down. It was hailed as a blow for male freedom and their inalienable right to do what comes naturally but at the time it divided a nation – mostly into those who pee and those who have to clean the bathroom. Bathroom rugs should always be washed at least weekly, but if there is a houseful of chaps whose aim is less than perfect, this should be more often. Bathroom rugs need to be washable at high temperatures to rid them of any germs that have taken residence and also to prevent nasty niffs. Because the bottom line is – most men can't aim!

Do aim aids work?
If the men in your house are a little … random … there are sticky gizmos you can place in the bowl of the toilet for them to aim at which are great fun and also minimise clean-up. They are often shaped as targets but you can get them in all different shapes. If you don’t feel flush enough to buy one of those, you could kill two birds with one stone and use one of the stick-on toilet-fresheners instead and leave instructions for them all to aim at that. The secret is to make clean-up easy and so some flushable toilet wipes to hand is probably a good idea. Bathroom rugs will make freshening the room easier – if you have fitted carpet (not generally recommended in a bathroom) a rug will stop too much mess on the floor which will get a bit whiffy over time.

Accidents do happen

Hopefully, when talking of accidents it is only small children who are the subject (although the elderly can also get caught short). If you are in the middle of potty-training, you may want to get a few extra bathroom rugs to put down – a plastic bag underneath might also be a plan. The thing is that if you make the child think there is something ‘naughty’ about using the potty, this sometimes very fraught stage in their development can get very tricky indeed, so keeping things as normal as possible is always best. If you keep a bathroom rug with a potty in every room (discreetly – even small children like their privacy) you can start to remove extra ones as the child’s control improves. Most people find it only takes a short while before the child is taking themselves off to the bathroom on their own. And then the fun can begin – can men aim? Everyone has a memory of treading unexpectedly on a Lego brick when tiptoeing across a child’s bedroom floor – either as that child, sneaking downstairs for an illicit biscuit or as a parent or babysitter trying not to wake the child with unwisely loud cursing. And it does hurt – a lot! Keeping kids on message when it comes to keeping their bedrooms tidy is a bit of a mission, though – tidying is boring; playing isn’t. But most children – except the real tinies and of course the ubiquitous teenager – like to have a neat environment. It is more calming and certainly most people of any age would rather live in a tidy room than in a pigsty. So, how to make them keep their room looking good, all the time?

Buy some new stuff and they will want to look after it

If their room is just full of tatty bits and pieces inherited from older siblings there is no earthly reason for them to keep it neat. Would you? Instead, gather them round the laptop and go shopping – set them a budget and tell them that they have to stick to it. Also make sure you retain power of veto – kids can be weird. A nice bedroom rug will immediately appeal to the girls, especially if it is fluffy and a bit princessy. For the boys, there are lots of children’s rugs for sale which are in football colours and if they are not sporty, you can also get some that are printed with roads or other play scenarios. For the really little ones, you can perhaps run to several children’s rugs in different colours, for playing farms or zoos. Whatever you decide, let the child in on the decision-making.

Big kids get homesick too

When your eldest is going to university, there is a lot of emotion sloshing around the house. He or she is bound to be playing it cool and pretending they don’t mind leaving home. Mum and Dad are probably in bits. But here’s the secret – they don’t want to go any more than you want them to, but it has to be done. They will be feeling a bit cut loose in their room in halls or in a shared flat or house so buying them some bits and pieces to make it feel like home is a good plan. A bedroom rug chosen with Mum or Dad will always be a reminder that the family are still there and best of all, it doesn’t look quite as childish as a teddy sitting on the bed – boys in particular will really appreciate that! A bedroom rug is also a handy purchase, because it can go from digs to first flat to a first real home and will keep some continuity – kids need that more than they will ever let on. So whether you are buying a bedroom rug for a toddler to hide his Lego in or a student about to fly the nest – make it a family affair.Philip Cottonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17044448602892881175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171217998218510309.post-83013224467522952892015-05-17T13:10:00.000+01:002017-09-24T21:58:35.703+01:00Tired of upcycling and recycling? Let’s make ‘round-cycling’ the new trend

Whenever you turn on the TV these days, or so it seems, there is someone on there telling you how to save money on your food bills (it usually comes down simply to buying cheaper food, so let’s not go there) or how to turn your unwanted wardrobe into a darned fine kennel for a dog you haven’t got but might be buying any minute because you can afford one now, having taken to buying cheaper food. Well, upcycling and all the rest is all very well and fine but some of us just don’t have the time for making teapot stands out of broken china – how much broken china does the average household end up with in a week, anyway? So why not start a trend – let’s call it round-cycling.

How does round-cycling work?
Seeing as how it has just this minute been made up, it can work any way you fancy, but the basic principle is that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Take an example that every home has experienced. You have a shaggy rug that is still perfectly okay but you are tired of seeing it every day when you come home from work, so you buy another. But then this means you have a perfectly okay shaggy rug and nowhere to put it. One option is to put it in the bin, but that would be a shame. Charity shop? Car boot? Or hey – here’s a thought: why not use it upstairs on the landing? It would go with that bathroom rug a treat. Then, what do you do with the very good quality wool carpet runner on the landing? Well, it would go really perfectly at the end of the bed. Which means there is no room any more for the round rug which is in the bedroom. But that will go a treat in the dining room, rather than the coir fibre natural rug that is in there at the moment. That can go in the kitchen. And the kitchen rug?

Here’s where it gets clever
You go into work the next day and tell everyone about your new invention of round-cycling and someone tells you about their neighbour, whose son has just moved into a student flat. They have bought him a lovely rug for the kitchen, but fear it may be spoiled, so you give them your old one instead. But this leaves your colleague’s neighbours with a brand new washable rug which they hadn’t expected – hold on, though! Their hall runner is looking a bit the worse for wear, so they replace it. The old hall runner can go in the conservatory, to mop up dirty paw prints from the dog they can now afford because the kid has moved out; round-cycling doesn’t just have to apply to rugs, you know! Look around the house and you will find lots of things to round-cycle, from pots and pans to furniture and all without picking up so much as a nail!

How to freshen up your rugs

Does my house smell is something that most people worry about from time to time. In this day and age there isn’t much excuse for a smelly home because there are so many different products on the market to keep it smelling nice but most of them tend to mask rather than remove and prevention is very much better than cure. It is difficult to avoid cooking smells while the dinner is actually in the oven and indeed, the smell is a large part of the enjoyment of any meal so no one wants to get rid of it altogether. It is when it is still hanging around two days later the trouble begins and the problem is that smells linger in fabrics and most especially in carpeting and rugs. Buying cheaper rugs and carpets and replacing them is one option, but keeping them clean isn’t too difficult however it is important to treat some fibres with care.

Never soak a wool rug

Wool rugs are lovely but they are difficult to clean if they get a really bad spill on them because they should never be soaked with any liquid. If something like wine is spilled on a wool rug it should be blotted as far as possible and any cleaning fluid should be tried on an inconspicuous area first. But for simply freshening up, you can dust some bicarbonate of soda into the pile and leave for a few hours or overnight. After that, the wool rug should be vacuumed gently and if possible given a thorough shake outside. The bicarb will have soaked up any stale smells and the rug will smell like new again. Some people like to sprinkle some lavender on the rug at this point and this will certainly make it smell nice, but this is not recommended for light colours, because the oils from even dried lavender can stain.

If you can wash your hall runner, then do

Some rugs are of course much more prone to being smelly than others and in particular these are bathroom rugs, kitchen rugs and hall runners. Hall runners have to take whatever the visiting feet throw at them and grubby shoes can carry all kinds of things into the house on them, which can get ground in and smell quite nasty. The trouble is that few people are aware of the smell of their own house and it is a bit ironic that the smelliest rug – the hall runner – is the one that people encounter first. Ideally, these rugs should be washed weekly and if you have two to change around regularly then so much the better because you should always make sure they are completely dry before putting them down again – if they are damp, they will smell musty after a while and so the matter will be even worse. Bathroom rugs should certainly be washed or aired at least once a week and more if the family is large. Natural rugs are a good choice in the kitchen, being easy to vacuum and also easy on the feet on the usually hard floors in that room.

Now, this isn’t another of those blogs about an eighteen year old marrying a ninety-five year old millionaire – it’s about how to mix and match different eras in your home and it will be a lot more successful than that marriage, that’s for sure! Lots of people decorate with very strict rules about what can be mixed with what and it can end up looking a bit sterile. After all, when they were ‘new’ and ‘newish’ Art Deco and Art Nouveau turned up on the same mantelpiece – people didn’t throw things away just because a brand new trend had surfaced, so there is no need to keep things apart now. When you have paid for a traditional rug, for instance, there is no need to change it because you have made the rest of the décor more trendy – the fact is, the two styles will get along just fine.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water

Although your traditional rug may not be an antique of the future, it has a place in any décor. And if you have bought modern rugs and now want a change, the same thing applies. Just think of all those people who had Flotaki rugs back in the day – it’s a sure bet they wish they had kept them now, because they are right on trend. It isn’t everything that deserves to be kept no matter what, but you will know what you like and what you don’t want to part with. A natural rug will keep its good looks for years and a wool rug will never date. The real rule with buying anything if you want it to stand the test of time is to spend as much as you can possibly afford. Traditional rugs in particular are examples of where this rule bears fruit – if you buy a really good, hand knotted rug you really could be giving your grandchildren a nice heirloom. But if your pocket won't stretch to that just yet, why not by a lookalike and get the pleasure of the look while you save up.

Take care of things and they will last

It isn’t too obvious to say that if you look after things they will last longer – many people abuse or neglect their belongings and are then surprised when they fall to bits. When you get your traditional rug home – or any rug with an unusual pile or finish – you will find care instructions with it and these are there for a reason. Many traditional rugs have a silk finish whether or not they actually contain the fibre and this is ruined if you use the beater bar of your vacuum cleaner. Switch it off if your cleaner has this facility or use the tool – you will ruin the pile if you are too rough with it and your traditional rug will be ruined. Traditional doesn’t mean tired and tatty, so take care of things and they will last a lifetime.

What with central heating and a lot of man-made fibres in clothes and furnishings, lots of people these days suffer from static build-up, often causing painful discharge of sparks either from one person to another or from a person to an object, such as a metal bowl in the kitchen, a doorknob or light switch. If you are very unfortunate you will find you have an almost permanently statically charged cat, which makes for interesting times; it really makes them grumpy. There are various things you can do to prevent this, such as tumble drying with an anti-static sheet in the drum and wearing as much cotton as you can, but one thing that will make a big difference is using natural rugs on your floors. Natural fibred hardly ever hold a static charge and you will be much more comfortable if you use wool rugs or ones made of bamboo or coir as much as possible.

Humidifiers can help as well
Although most people worry about their homes being damp, dry air is a real problem if static is causing you discomfort. You can choose to have a device which puffs out small amounts of steam on a timer or you can have other gadgets that spin water in a tank and this humidify the air. If you have a raffia or coir natural rug you can damp them down very slightly in very dry weather – they won't mind this and in fact it will keep them supple. The problem with many man-made fibres is that every time you step on them they rub together under the weight of your foot and each time they do this they build a charge, which then gathers until it is earthed by something – and here we are, back at the poor unfortunate cat. Natural wool rugs don’t do that because the wool, raffia, coconut fibre or what have you don’t have the same properties. Although you will probably have a lot of sources of static in your home, natural rugs will ensure you don’t make things worse just by walking across the floor.

How to be more comfortable in a static environment
With so many gadgets around all giving off electrons the modern home can really never be free from the problem, but along with your natural rugs you can make other changes to make things more comfortable. Keeping the air damper is certainly a way of doing this and using a natural bristle brush will help your hair be less static. When you are vacuuming or any other task involving a rhythmic movement, wear cotton if you can, so you don’t accidentally build up static in your clothes as your arm brushes your body. Use fabric softener or, preferably, dry your clothes outside so they discharge to the air. And, whatever you do, if he is looking fluffier than usual and a bit out of sorts – don’t touch the cat!

Most rooms, perhaps obviously, are square or rectangular and this is reinforced by how we place the furniture – normally around the walls or opposite other items. Think two sofas facing or a couple of bookcases and chairs around the wall. If you introduce a round rug into this scenario, it gives a bit of fluidity and makes the whole area look less formal.

It depends, but most people tend to decorate somewhere in the house at least once a year. There is something about the lengthening days of spring that make us want to have a bit of a spruce up in the house and the areas most often decorated are the hall, the sitting room and the kitchen. After all, they are the areas that most visitors see and where most people spend a great deal of time. The problem is that there is a limit on how much decorating you can do – either the money or the inclination runs out and yet again the upstairs has been forgotten and looks even dingier than it did when the same thing happened the year before and even possibly the year before that. So, once again, the poor old bedroom loses out.

If the budget has almost gone … again!

Perhaps this advice comes too late and you have already done the decorating and spent almost every penny. Not to worry – there is still an awful lot you can do. Most people suffer from a shortage of drawer and hanging space and this can leave the bedroom looking a little like a laundry, with clothes everywhere. Before you buy a nice wool bedroom rug to make things a little fresher and more luxurious, it probably wouldn’t hurt to go through all the things you have stuffed in drawers and in piles around the room and see what can go to the charity shop or car boot. Once the room is clear, you can decide on a rug – wool rugs are lovely in bedrooms because they are so soft on the feet, but you may feel that something a little more exotic would be nice for a change. In that case, a shaggy rug with a metallic thread would look very feminine and being in a low traffic area won't suffer from a flattened pile.

Be selfish!

The great thing about buying a bedroom rug is that you don’t really have to think about anyone but yourself (and possibly your other half …) because unless you invite them in, visitors aren’t likely to be going into your bedroom on a regular basis. So if you fancy an elegant wool rug or a crazy pink furry one, it is totally up to you. Most bedrooms have limited floor space so you probably won't need a very large rug in your bedroom so you can go for quality and natural fibres have a lot to be said for them in the bedroom because they don’t cause static build-up, the cause of bad sleep patterns, according to some sources. A bedroom rug will need frequent shaking and vacuuming because there are a lot of health issues to consider. Bed mites are on the increase and are found in even the cleanest homes and of course the shed skin flakes and hair that are inevitable in a bedroom make a perfect breeding ground for the little varmints.Philip Cottonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17044448602892881175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171217998218510309.post-34392790361257765532015-02-13T12:13:00.000+00:002017-03-25T14:18:23.222+00:00Keep muddy paw prints off your best carpets with a hall runner

And that doesn’t just mean dog prints either. Everyone has had the experience of opening the door to someone and realising to their horror that the visitor intends to tramp through the house will all manner of yuck adhering to their feet. It’s very rude of course, but many of us don’t feel comfortable asking guests to take their shoes off, especially if the visit is just a short one, for example reading the meter. However, no one likes to spend good money on lovely rugs through the house to have them trampled on by grubby feet, especially if they have splashed out on some expensive silk traditional rugs or some lovely shaggy wool rugs which really can trap the crap. So, what’s to be done?

Buy a natural fibre hall runner

If you have a farmhouse style interior there is nothing better in the hall than a natural coir or raffia hall runner. They look the part and they really trap the dirt. Not only that, the dirt, when dry, falls through and so you don’t pick it up on the return trip and traipse it all through the rest of the house. There is also a chance that the visitor, realising that you have taken steps to protect the floor, will at least wipe their feet – but that may be just a dream! Natural rugs are easy to keep clean as well; you should vacuum all floor coverings regularly anyway but coir really responds to daily cleaning and a damp mop (not sopping, just damp) will take away the surface dirt very well. They also like a good shake outside but be careful – a long hall runner made of coir or any natural material can be quite heavy, so it isn’t a job for one.

Dogs are the worst, though!

Although thoughtless people do tend to drag dirt in on their feet at least as a rule they have watched where the step. It goes without saying that by and large dogs don’t give a hoot where they put their feet; in fact, they can pretty much be relied upon to find anything smelly, sticky and gruesome that is around when they are out for a walk. If you have dogs or have friends with them, a hall runner that can be washed easily at regular intervals might be more the kind of thing that would help you keep the rest of the house dog-yuck free. Whether you use a smaller one which will pop in the washing machine daily or a larger one that you can hose down outside, a washable hall runner will help you keep the house cleaner and fresher and without the pervading air of not just dog but everywhere the dog has been. Hall runners don’t have to look as if they are there just to keep dirt at bay, either. Whether washable or natural fibre, they can also look very handsome while they work!
Whist the development of rugs dates back two thousand five hundred years, buying a new rug for Europeans has only remained a daunting experience since the Middle Ages. In today’s bustling market there is an endless choice of textures, styles and fibres to choose from and not forgetting the options handmade or machine made rugs. Needless to say choosing a rug can get more than a little confusing, whether to go for cheap rugs produced on machines, expensive rugs that are hand oven or something in the middle. To really appreciate what goes into a rug lets take a brief look at its origins.

While Ancient Britons were developing bronze tools and building stone circles, Persian craftsmen were hand-weaving rugs. Many of these original rugs depicted stories of battles, wealth and religious events. As the understanding of weaving techniques expanded into Turkey and Asia regional design styles developed, these styles still dominate many of the traditional rugs today. Whilst we don’t really know when the first rugs reached Europe, we do know that the Vikings brought weaving techniques to Scandinavia and the oldest rug discovered in Europe dates back to 300BC, this was discovered by Russian archaeologists in Siberia.
Wool rugs are a great way to bring real luxury to a room, having a dense pile and keeping their good looks for many years. Although there are a few rules for caring for your new wool rug, don’t be put off because by taking just a little more care when cleaning your rug, it will last for ages and will always bounce back, with no flattened pile as sometimes happens with cheaper fibres.

Simple maintenance for wool rugs

The best way to keep your wool rug looking like new is to clean them regularly. Letting the dirt get ingrained can result in the fibres getting cut by sharp grit or accretions so the best plan is to vacuum at least several times a week, more often if they are in high traffic areas. Wool rugs can sometimes lose their bounce if vacuumed with the beater bars on, so if you can disable them on your vacuum cleaner, so much the better. If you can’t, then use the hose and a separate head – it may seem a bit of a kerfuffle, but it is worth it to keep your wool rug looking top notch. If you have a spill, mop it up at once; scrape up any solids if it isn’t all liquid. Never soak your wool rug and be gentle if using steam. Everything in moderation should be your watchword when dealing with your rugs day to day.
